Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as campaigning?

  • Candidacy Statement
  • Physical materials around campus
  • Networking and speaking in public
  • Social media posts
  • Announcements made in your classes (In person and online. Ask permission from the instructor.)
  • Please note - You can do as much or as little campaigning as you want up until elections on 5/13 & 14, as long as we have your candidacy statement.

When do campaign materials need to come down?

Candidates can leave materials up until after elections are closed. We advise against active campaigning while ballot boxes are open on 5/13 & 14. Remember, not everyone has the same schedule and opportunity to campaign during that time.

Can you tell people what position you're running for?

Yes, but communicating further about your candidacy, campaigning, begins after 5:00 p.m. on 5/7.

(Ukiah) If we place a ballot box in the library, how can we campaign to constituents in the lower space, such as MESA?

The ballot box will be placed upstairs, campaigning is allowed downstairs.

Can candidates be appointed to vacant positions?

Yes, kind of. ASMC bylaws say the Student Senate can appoint candidates to vacancies as long as we give two weeks' notice. ASMC can vote to change that to one week if we want to do a special appointment meeting on 5/24. We could also wait until early August, like we did with this year's appointees. The ASMC will decide on 5/17 at its final regular meeting.

How to approach campaigns and chosen roles if we're not comfortable with competing?

Campaigns are competitions. You're proving that you're willing to take a stance for students. This is part of advocacy. However, ASMC President Baker proposes sending everyone a snapshot of who's running for what on 5/7. Candidates will be given one final chance to decide which roles they want to try for the most and amend their candidate statements if needed. Candidates wishing to pursue a certain role shall not be pressured to step aside,The majority will decide between multiple candidates running for the same role.
